Erta Ale

Erta Ale is known as the most active Volcano in Africa (and, of course, one of the few in the world), having hosted a permanent Lava Lake for longer than 120 years and which has been in a state of continuous eruption since 1967. some researches show that such continuous eruption goes back to 1906. The Erta Ale Volcano contains a 0.7x1.6 km elliptical summit crater witch numerous carters, one of them containing a lava lake. Another Larger depression elongated parallel to the trend of the Erta Ale range is located to the SE of the summit and is bounded by curvilinear fault scraps on the SE side.

The other one is the Dallol volcano located at the northern Danakil area. Dallol is known for its fascinating fumaroles, amazing rock formation, crystal and mineral deposits. At the miners’ town of Ahmed Ela near Lake Assale we’ll watch the centuries-old ritual of salt cutting, the shaping of salt blocks and the endless caravans arriving and leaving loaded with the precious “white gold”.
