Harar & Dire Dawa
Near Dire Dawa, you may see the great trains of camels wending their way as they have done for centuries. A smooth 50 km (34 miles) drive through rolling fertile hills takes you to Harar, glistening 1,850 meters up on a hillside. The high stonewalls of the city, pierced with 5 gates and topped by 25 towers, the flat roofed houses, the exquisite mosques; all give the impression of having wandered into a city from the Arabian nights. Another unique experience that awaits one is the feeding of the hyenas by the only man who has ever succeeded in coaxing these timid creatures to take food from a human being.
